OWASSO – An Avant man surrendered to police on Tuesday after he allegedly kidnapped the mother of his child from her workplace, assaulted her and wrecked the car he used to abduct her.
Michael Dale Nelson, 28, was arrested at the Owasso police station on complaints of kidnapping, domestic assault and battery, and threatening a violent act after the former conviction of a felony.
Nelson was named as a suspect after a Petsmart employee was forcibly taken from the store at 9002 N. 121st East Ave. on Monday night.
About an hour after the abduction, the silver Chevrolet Malibu the abductor and captive were traveling in crashed on Oklahoma 11, about four miles north of Oklahoma 20 near Avant, police said. The woman was treated for minor crash-related injuries, but her abductor fled the scene on foot.
Nelson and the woman had an off-and-on cohabiting relationship for five years and have a child together, according to Nelson’s arrest report.
A witness told police she heard a phone call between Nelson and the woman during which he told the victim he was going to kill her, according to Nelson’s arrest report.
The victim told police Nelson threatened to kill her and himself. She said Nelson was mad at her because he did not want her to go to work Monday, the arresting officer wrote. Nelson dragged her through the store, forced her into the car and threatened her with a .45-caliber handgun he told her he had under his seat, the victim told police.
Officers made note of injuries to the victim’s face consistent with being punched and marks on her neck they believe to be caused by grabbing and squeezing.
Nelson is being held at the Tulsa Jail without bond.
He pleaded guilty to charges including arson, child endangerment and attempting to manufacture a controlled dangerous substance in 2010. He received a 13-year suspended sentence and was ordered to spend one year in a sober living program. An application to revoke that sentence was filed in August.
He also pleaded guilty in a 2005 drug possession case in which sentencing was deferred for three years. He was then sentenced to 100 hours community service in 2008.
