Gas prices drop below $3 in Tulsa

QuikTrip stations dropped their price for regular unleaded gasoline to $2.999 per gallon Thursday afternoon, the lowest price in nearly a year and part of a 70-cent decline in less than two months.

In the most tumultuous year for gasoline prices since 2008, collapsing wholesale costs have pushed down what motorist pay at the Tulsa pump.

QuikTrip stations were charging $3.65 only a month ago. The last time prices were below $3 per gallon was in December 2011, according to reports.

"That's incredible," QuikTrip spokesman Michael Thornbrugh said about the meteoric rise and fall at the pump. "This is one which the people should enjoy."

One factor easing local prices is that Tulsa stations aren't selling the summer blend which has a lower vapor pressure and costs more to refine, he noted.
