COLLINSVILLE - Collinsville clinched a playoff berth by soundly defeating Pryor 34-6 in a key District 5A-4 showdown Friday night.
Quarterback Zane McElroy led the way for Collinsville (7-2, 4-2) by accounting for four touchdowns in the victory.
McElroy threw for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 72 yards and two touchdowns.
"He's everything for this team," said Collinsville coach Kevin Jones. "He is our leading rusher and obviously our leading passer."
McElroy's favorite target was receiver T.J. Johnson, who caught five passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. He also had an interception on defense.
Johnson made the play of the night in the first quarter. McElroy threw the ball deep to Johnson who had a Pryor (4-5, 3-3) defender covering him well. Johnson went up and fought for the ball, which popped up in the air with both players crashing to the ground. Johnson located the ball and made a one-handed grab as he was sitting on the turf for a 40-yard gain.
Collinsville scored on their first drive when McElroy connected with Ryan Haymaker on a 48-yard pass on a third down.
"Pryor took away our run early but we are confident in our ability to throw the ball," said Jones.
The balance of the Collinsville attack was impressive. After some early success throwing the ball they focused more on their rushing attack. They finished with 238 yards passing and 175 yards rushing.
Collinsville displayed a dominant defense that played with inspiration according to Jones.
"This was a big game for our seniors knowing what kind of position a victory would put us in for the playoffs," said Jones.
The defensive line of Collinsville controlled the game for long stretches. Defensive end Newt Salisbury and nose tackle Nathan Johnson frequently collapsed the pocket and harassed runners in the backfield.
The defensive line was key in limiting a potent Pryor offense to under 300 yards of total offense.
Pryor was led by running back Carson Smallwood. He carried 28 times for 157 yards.
Quarterback Keegan Yates found Brannon Barth for a 15-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
