CLEVELAND - An interception by Derek Reeves sealed the deal for the Class 4A No. 8 Cleveland Tigers in their 35-28 win against No. 9 Catoosa on Friday night at Billy Vessels Memorial Stadium.
The win clinches second place in District 4A-3 for the Tigers (8-1 overall, 5-1 in district), who bounced back after being dealt their first loss last week at Wagoner.
The Indians (5-4, 4-2) had scored a touchdown with 2:11 left in the game and were threatening to tie it, relying on a passing attack and a hurry-up offense with no time- outs left. But Reeves picked off a pass from junior Caleb Wilsey, returned it about 20 yards to the Tiger 42 and took a knee with 21 seconds left.
Wilsey took over behind center for the Indians in the fourth quarter after starter Austin Potter had to exit due to an injury.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Catoosa.
"It was a good job by our defense tonight," Cleveland coach Dale Anderson said. "The defense played really well. So that's a big win for us."
Reeves grabbed a 67-yard TD pass from Chas Stallard to jumpstart the Tigers to a 7-0 lead on their opening possession. He would finish with two catches for 81 yards.
Stallard threw for 149 yards on 7-of-14 attempts and scored two TDs.
Dakota Hewitt had 103 yards on 17 carries.
Cleveland held a 21-13 lead at intermission, but Catoosa stormed back in the second half.
Using its running attack, Catoosa moved from its 39 to the Cleveland 1 where Hunter Harrison scored then made the two-point conversion as Potter connected with Hagan Harrison in the end zone, tying the score at 21-21.
