The eastbound lanes of the west leg of the Inner Dispersal Loop were reopened Tuesday following repairs to the Interstate 244 bridge over Third Street, which had sustained structural damage earlier this month.

A truck's hydraulic lift had struck the bridge from Third Street below on Oct. 15, ODOT said.

Workers had to replace a large section of beam and deck on the bridge, the agency reported.

State transportation officials had targeted mid-November for completion of the repairs and the reopening of the bridge. The project was completed more than three weeks ahead of schedule, ODOT said.

Engineers expedited a repair plan at an estimated cost of $450,000, with incentives available for the contractor, Manhattan Road and Bridge, to finish ahead of schedule, ODOT said. The incentives are still being calculated, the state agency said Tuesday.

ODOT also said it expects to recover all costs related to the closure and repair project from those responsible for damaging the bridge.

Third Street will remain closed under I-244 until further notice while crews continue work there, ODOT said.
