Practice sessions critical as coaches evaluate Green

Overwhelmingly, the status of quarterback Cody Green is this week's most prominent TU storyline. Still recovering from an Oct. 6 shoulder injury sustained at Marshall, Green did not play against Rice on Oct. 20. If he is destined to start at Arkansas on Saturday, he needs to practice effectively on Tuesday and Wednesday. "Cody is throwing the football, but he hasn't heaved it around and thrown it with conviction - like he'll have to do in the game," TU coach Bill Blankenship said on Monday night. "What I have to find out is what Cody can tolerate. I need to see him crank on the ball a little bit and see what he can handle."

Good vs. good: TU run game vs. Razorback run defense

On a combined total of 275 carries, TU tailbacks Ja'Terian Douglas, Trey Watts and Alex Singleton have rushed for 1,704 yards and 23 touchdowns this season. Their collective average per attempt is 6.2 yards. Arkansas has problems, but run defense is not among them. The Razorbacks allow only 123.4 yards per game and only 3.4 per attempt. If the Hurricane can routinely run for 250 yards against Conference USA opponents, can it run for 180 against an SEC defense? "It's all a function of whether you can block the guy in front of you," Blankenship said. "If you execute it correctly, then you've blocked the guy in front of you and the play works. We've got to be balanced. We've got to hit on some throws and we've got to make Arkansas defend the whole field. We can't be predictable."

Can Hurricane get sacks and pressure Tyler Wilson?

Through eight games, Tulsa has 35 sacks (having blown past last season's 13-game total of 27). At 4.37 sacks per game, the Golden Hurricane is the national leader. Arkansas' pass protection has been excellent. In six games, the Hogs have surrendered no more than one sack. Can TU's front-seven personnel pressure Razorback QB Tyler Wilson?

"They throw the football a lot and they their quarterback very well. It's impressive," Blankenship said. "So much of pressure results from the quarterback holding the ball too long. Tyler Wilson does a good job of getting rid of the football quickly. To me, Tyler Wilson is right up there with those guys we faced last year (OU's Landry Jones, OSU's Brandon Weeden, Boise State's Kellen Moore and Houston's Case Keenum). Tyler Wilson is that kind of guy."

BY THE NUMBERS

34: Senior tailback Alex Singleton has 15 rushing touchdowns this season and a program-record 34 for his career. With five more TDs, he will have tied TU's school record for overall career touchdowns.

27: Of the 42 touchdowns scored by Tulsa this season, 27 have occurred on run plays. Tailbacks Singleton, Ja'Terian Douglas, Trey Watts and Zach Langer have a combined total of 25.

4.37: As has been the case all season, Tulsa leads the nation in sacks. Entering Saturday's assignment at Arkansas, the Hurricane averages 4.37 sacks per game.

10-1: As a starting quarterback, Cody Green has a career record of 10-1. He was 4-0 at Nebraska. As a TU junior this season, he is 6-1.

40: Dating to 1953, the last 40 football games matching the Golden Hurricane and Razorbacks have been played in the state of Arkansas.
