For the first time in the Williams Route 66 Marathon's seven-year history, the marathon and half marathon have sold out. The half marathon reached capacity Oct. 21 and the marathon reached capacity Tuesday, more than two and a half weeks before race day, which is Nov. 18 in Tulsa.
"This is a considerable milestone," said Chris Lieberman, executive director of Tulsa Route 66 Marathon Inc. "We had 3,000 runners and walkers that first year, and to see how far we've come is exciting. It's a testament to all of the hard work invested by so many people to make this one of the best races in the country."
Current participant totals for each race as of Wednesday are: marathon (sold out) - 2,250; half marathon (sold out) - 4,500; relay (three-to-five-person teams) - 1,000 people registered with 47 team slots available; 5k - more than 1,200 registered with a cap of 2,000; fun run and walk - more than 500 registered with a cap of 750. Organizers predict all events will sell out with a total of 10,500 participants across all five races.
