Optimus Klein
Kansas State is in the midst of a campaign to promote quarterback Collin Klein for the Heisman Trophy and other postseason awards.
The Cowboys don't need to read promo material to know what the player with the Transformers nickname can do. They got a heavy dose of Optimus Klein in Stillwater last season.
Klein threw for 231 yards and ran for 144 during a four-touchdown (three rushing, one passing) performance that resulted in him being both bloodied and respected.
"He was pretty beat up and bruised and bleeding a little bit on the elbows," Cowboy linebacker Alex Elkins said. "He took a beating and kept getting up."
Klein's supporting cast
Mike Gundy said Klein is getting a lot of attention and deservedly so. But the OSU coach reminded reporters that Klein is "not the only guy on their team."
Said Gundy, "There are other guys that are solid and then they have guys that are smart and play their position. And - from an outsider looking in - they do what they are asked to do."
Booker T. Washington graduate Tyler Lockett, eighth nationally in kickoff returns, accumulated 315 all-purpose yards (fifth-most in school history) and 193 kickoff return yards at OSU's expense last season.
Gundy also mentioned No. 4, alias senior linebacker Arthur Brown. Said Gundy, "I have never been in the NFL and I don't draft players, but I wouldn't mind picking him early and spending some money on him."
Road start No. 2
Wes Lunt started a Sept. 8 game at Arizona, and there were questions about how a freshman quarterback would fare when playing for the first time in a hostile environment.
OSU had problems that night, but the rookie was not one of them. Lunt set a school and Big 12 freshman record by throwing for 436 yards in a 59-38 defeat.
Now Lunt gets his first Big 12 road start and it will come in a nationally televised game against the nation's third-ranked team.
By the numbers
109: Rushing yards Joseph Randle needs to clinch a second consecutive 1,000-yard season.
73: Rushing yards Randle accumulated against Kansas State last season.
2: Rushing yards Randle needs to catch 11th-place Vernand Morency on OSU's career list.
2: Rushing touchdowns Randle needs to catch fourth-place Kendall Hunter on OSU's career list.
