Running back Damien Williams and offensive lineman Lane Johnson returned to practice, coach Bob Stoops announced on Wednesday, but the players are listed as questionable for Saturday's game at Iowa State.
The starters are nursing ankle injuries suffered in last week's home loss to Notre Dame.
If Williams cannot play against the Cyclones, Dominique Whaley will start for the Sooners. Whaley, a 2011 starter, hasn't played in the past two games and only has had seven total carries in the past four games.
Reinstated players: Oklahoma defensive back Quentin Hayes has been reinstated, Stoops announced.
There was no status change in suspended players Jaz Reynolds and Trey Franks, who were suspended with Hayes last summer.
Hayes, Reynolds and Franks have been allowed to practice only since fall camp.
Scouting Iowa State: Oklahoma will face a football team on Saturday that has been stingy against opposing offenses visiting its stadium.
Iowa State has played well defensively at home against FBS competition.
Last week, it defeated Baylor 35-21 while holding the Bears well below their scoring average of 48 points a game.
"They're very consistent in the way they play, especially their defense," OU center Gabe Ikard said. "They're very sound with their technique and the way they use their hands.
"We need to have a great week of practice and be prepared to play a tough, physical defense."
Iowa State will be without linebacker Jake Knott, who will miss the remainder of the regular season after having shoulder surgery.
Rowdy stadium: Oklahoma wide receiver Justin Brown expects a rowdy stadium this weekend.
"I think it's going to be a good atmosphere and one good to play in," Brown said. "I'm sure their players and fans will be riled up. We have to be able to match that intensity."
Quality losses: Oklahoma's two losses this season have come against No. 3 Kansas State and No. 4 Notre Dame, which are a combined 16-0 this season.
Iowa State has been defeated by opponents that are a combined 19-4.
