Dear Action Line: What are the top charities helping the victims of superstorm Sandy? I'm getting all these urgent Facebook pleas, and the like, and don't want to give money to disaster scammers. - P.T., Bixby
CharityWatch, 20 years known as the American Institute of Philanthropy, announced its top-rated list of charities involved in relief of superstorm Sandy victims.
CharityWatch is a leading charity watchdog group that issues letter grades (A to F) to nonprofits soliciting donations. It named the top nine charities providing aid to superstorm Sandy victims, carrying "A" or "B" grades. Grades are based on the amount of funds going to their stated "program services" and fundraising efficiencies.
All are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, and to be able to deduct your contribution on your federal income taxes return, under the Internal Revenue Code, you must know the organization's "employer identification number" (EIN). The EIN, also known as the federal "tax identification number," is used to identify nonprofit entities. The EIN is a unique 9-digit number, similar to the Social Security number for an individual.
