BARTLESVILLE - In a game where the winner advanced to the playoffs and the loser stays home, Booker T. Washington defeated Bartlesville 34-26.
Capitalizing on turnovers was the key for Booker T. Washington in the District 6A-1 battle.
Leading by one point with 5:36 left in the game, Hornets senior defensive back Dominique Alexander intercepted a pass and returned it for the game-sealing points.
Booker T. Washington (6-4 overall, 3-4 in the district) will face top-ranked Jenks in a first-round playoff game.
"When I found out the down and distance, I knew it was coming and I'd seen the lineman come towards me," said Alexander, who is verbally committed to Arkansas, but said he got an offer from Oklahoma on Tuesday. "I snuck under him and I just saw the ball and returned it for a touchdown.
"It was all really just from watching film and great preparation during the week."
But the host Bruins, who finished 6-4 and 3-4, would not surrender. They drove to the Hornet 26, but turned the ball over on downs.
With a final chance, Cochran, a senior, rushed for a 14-yard gain, but fumbled at the BTW 34. Senior Tajh Lowe recovered with 4 seconds to play, clinching it for the Hornets.
"I thought the kids played hard the whole time," BTW coach Marvin Dantzler said. "We could never put them away. (Alexander) did it for us tonight with a pick-six."
BTW thrived on the pass with Bennett White completing nearly 86 percent of his passes. He threw for 223 yards on 18-of-21 attempts and two TDs. Deonte Owens had a big rushing night with 168 yards on 23 carries and two TDs on rushes of 13 and 24 yards.
Bartlesville's Caleb Crowder had a game-high 216 yards on 28 carries with two TDs on runs of 72 and 15 yards.
The Hornets had a 21-20 lead at halftime after White found Isaiah Washington in the back of the end zone on the last play before intermission.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Bruins moved ahead 26-21 with a 1-yard rush from Slade Nordic on the first play of the fourth.
BTW answered with a 24-yard Owens run with 9:40 remaining and the Hornets were up 27-26. Booker T. Washington 34, Bartlesville 26
