The University of Tulsa basketball program already was outfitted with a new coach and eight new players, so Danny Manning thought it would be appropriate to outfit the Golden Hurricane in new uniforms.
Designed by Manning with the help of TU equipment manager Greg Criser and director of basketball operations Justin Bauman, the Nike-designed uniforms were delivered this week.
Manning isn't saying whether an additional style might be unveiled, but currently there are white, gold and black uniforms.
"We'll have some different combinations that haven't been used before," said Manning, who makes his head-coaching debut on Sunday at the Reynolds Center. In a 7 p.m. contest, the Hurricane hosts LSU-Shreveport.
For the opener, ticket and concession prices are reduced by 50 percent, and every fan in attendance gets a Tulsa basketball T-shirt. On the back of the T-shirt is this message: "I Believe in D'Mann."
On the front of the jerseys are the player's number, a Nike swoosh and an NCAA logo. On the back is a Conference USA logo. Adorning the jersey shoulders and the sides of the shorts is striping that was inspired, Criser said, by the stripes on TU's football helmets. The black and white basketball uniforms include gold-blue-gold stripes. The gold uniform has red-blue-red stripes.
"This is my first official sighting of the uniforms," Hurricane senior guard Scottie Haralson said. "I like everything about it - the way it looks and the way it feels. This one feels like it's more custom-fitted than the ones we wore last year.
"Everybody likes them. It's nice to have the black and the gold, too. We've got some variety."
Manning has not divulged which of the new uniforms will be worn on Sunday.
"It's a clean look," he said. "Classic. Sleek lines. It's all pretty fresh."
