For having scored 28 points in the first game of his University of Tulsa career, James Woodard has been named the Conference USA basketball freshman of the week.
In only 20 minutes of playing time against LSU-Shreveport on Sunday at the Reynolds Center, the 6-foot-4 Woodard scored 28 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field. He connected on five 3-point shots and totaled five rebounds and four assists. The Golden Hurricane prevailed 110-54.
Woodard’s point total was the greatest by a TU freshman in his first game since Shea Seals had 33 points against Houston Baptist in 1993. Seals now is a Golden Hurricane assistant coach.
The C-USA player of the week is UCF junior Isaiah Sykes, who had 26 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists during the Knights’ first victory over South Florida since 1978.
Next for Woodard and the Hurricane is a trip to San Diego. TU faces Northern Kentucky on Thursday, San Diego on Friday and Cal State Northridge on Saturday.
The Hurricane returns home for games a Nov. 21 meeting with Jackson State and a Nov. 24 date with Stephen F. Austin.
