McALESTER — Officials said a 63-year-old inmate at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary has died in the medical unit at the maximum-security prison.
Warden's assistant Terry Crenshaw said Fredrick B. Zimmer was pronounced dead shortly after midnight Monday. Crenshaw said Zimmer's cause of death is still unknown but officials believed he died of natural causes.
The McAlester News-Capital reports that Zimmer was serving a 10-year prison sentence out of Noble County. He was convicted in March 2010 of rape by instrumentation, forcible sodomy and two counts of lewd or indecent proposals or acts to a child younger than 16.
Crenshaw said Zimmer was transferred to the McAlester prison's medical unit earlier this month. Previously, he was serving his sentence at the Jess Dunn Correctional Center in Taft.
