Owen Elementary School was placed on a modified lockdown after someone in a minivan pointed a gun at students, district officials said.

The school, located at 1132 North Vandalia Avenue, was placed on modified lockdown at 11:43 a.m. after someone in a green or gray minivan pointed a gun at students on the playground, said Tulsa Public Schools spokesman Chris Payne.

District police and the Tulsa Police Department responded to the scene and gave the all clear for students to resume normal activities at 12:40 p.m.

Payne said the district discourages parents from coming to the school until a lockdown has been lifted.

During Thursday’s incident, Payne said several parents came to the school to pick up their child, which can make stressful situations more hectic.

“If the school is in lockdown, it is to keep students safe,” Payne said in an email. “We don’t want students leaving the building during a lockdown, as they are safer inside the building.”
