Bishop Kelley entered Friday night's Class 5A quarterfinal rematch against cross-state rival Bishop McGuinness seeking revenge for a loss earlier this season, but it was the visiting Fighting Irish who retained control of the Shillelagh Trophy with a 28-24 victory.

The Comets (9-3) clawed back from an early 14-point deficit to take a 24-21 lead with three minutes to play, but had no answer as McGuinness quarterback Jacob Lewis continued his dominant performance late in the game.

The junior - who finished the night with 402 all-purpose yards - led a 7-play, 74-yard drive he capped with a 3-yard quarterback draw to give the Irish their go-ahead score with a minute to play.

"He's a guy who's thrown for over 2,000 yards, but he's also rushed for over a thousand," said McGuinness coach Justin Jones. "He's a warrior and the guy that's our home run threat."

The Irish (12-1) drew first blood at the 6:22 mark of the first quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run by Lewis, then added another score minutes later with a 12-yard TD grab by receiver Cody Chancellor.

Kelley's defense forced three-and-outs on McGuinness' next two possessions, however, setting up a 10-yard touchdown run by junior Thomas Bingham halfway through the second quarter.

The Comets evened the score 14-14 on their next possession as senior Austin Morris found himself on the receiving end of a 70-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brady Goforth. The TD was the 36th of Morris' career, tying Bishop Kelley's all-time record.

Comet defensive lineman Cody Davis picked off a Lewis pass on the first Irish snap of the next drive, then rumbled 35 yards to the endzone to give Kelley a 21-14 lead at the half.

"Any time you've got to play a team two times that's the caliber of Bishop Kelley, it's tough," Jones said.

McGuinness faces Midwest City Carl Albert in the 5A State Semifinals on Friday.
