Delicious detail: Custom south Tulsa residence combines delightful features, distinctive floor plan

The south Tulsa community of the Villages of Highland Park is known for its Jack Arnold-designed homes. Practical floor plans and remarkable attention to detail are the architect’s signature.

Ben and Ashley Neal purchased the home at 7961 S. 90th E. Ave., a lovely two-story stucco residence in Preston Place, one of five neighborhoods in Highland Park. The house was built in 1999 by Sam Hollinger for Ben’s father, who subsequently sold the house to the couple.

“The open floor plan and nice detailing stand out in this home,” said Ashley.

The floor plan is distinctive with the kitchen and an adjoining sitting area or nook located off the entry. These areas share a vaulted ceiling and are tucked away from the foyer so they have a private feel, which you don’t find in many homes.

“I like to cook so this was imperative for me to have a living area near the kitchen. It’s cozy to have for casual entertaining,” Ashley said. “This is a definite entertaining house.”

The foyer extends to the back of the house, running alongside the family and dining rooms, which share a vaulted ceiling accented with beams. Three arched doorways open the space to the foyer, although the two outermost openings are embellished with wrought iron railings to give each space a more intimate ambiance.

A cast-stone fireplace warms the family room, while the dining area is close to a butler’s bar leading to the kitchen.

The backyard/outdoor living areas are additional features that are great for entertaining. The covered patio includes a fireplace and outdoor kitchen. An open patio is adjacent to the swimming pool. A large neighborhood pond stocked with fish and waterfowl is just beyond the pool, and a dog run is located at the side of the house.

“That pond is a special thing about this community,” Ashley said. “The people who live on the pond invest a lot of personal resources in it. They just put a new aerator in. There are beautiful stone benches around the pond. Many people here are avid waterfowl lovers. There are feeders all the way around for the waterfowl, and people have picnics out there.”

The setting is incredibly beautiful, and the home’s interior is very livable. The spacious master suite is located on the main level, tucked away and with access to the outdoor living areas.

Two additional bedrooms are located upstairs with a bath between them. Also upstairs is a landing area that is perfect for a home office. The space overlooks the entry as well as the living areas. A cedar closet is located on the landing as well.

Preston Place is one of three gated communities in the Villages of Highland Park. The neighborhood is an interesting part of south Tulsa that many people don’t know exists.

“One of the things I like about the Jack Arnold-designed homes in this gated neighborhood is the continuity in the look of the exteriors, but the floor plans and interiors of each one is unique,” said Franky Neal, the McGraw Realtor representing the property.
