Big 12 Power Poll

BY Staff Reports
Tuesday, November 20, 2012

1. Oklahoma: The Sooners have won six league games in a row but have shown susceptibility on defense in back-to-back weeks. Up next — a potent Oklahoma State offensive attack.

2. Kansas State: The Wildcats’ dream season came crashing down in Waco, Texas, last weekend. Kansas State will have one week to regroup before a season-ending meeting against visiting Texas.

3. Texas: Texas looked out of sorts earlier this season, especially after the Oklahoma loss. Now there are bowls drooling over a possible UT-Texas A&M game.

4. Oklahoma State: Have to be impressed with Clint Chelf. Instead of being discouraged by two freshmen getting starts ahead of him, the quarterback is making a name for himself.

5. TCU: The Horned Frogs’ entrance into the Big 12 includes a marquee matchup with Texas on Thanksgiving Day. Awaiting TCU is a Longhorns program on a four-game winning streak.

6. Texas Tech: Red Raiders hoped to avenge last year’s disappointing loss to the Cowboys, but ran into a buzzsaw on Oklahoma State’s final home game of 2012.

7. Baylor: Oklahoma was in Kansas State’s shoes last year — pointed toward a league title before getting ambushed in Waco. The Bears are closing in on bowl eligibility for a third straight year, a first in school history.

8. West Virginia: The Mountaineers started 5-0, had a Heisman Trophy candidate at quarterback and were predicted to be in the national title game. Now they still need one win for bowl eligibility.

9. Iowa State: Eleven games deep into the season and the Cyclones seem to have found a spark at quarterback with redshirt freshman Sam Richardson, who completed 23 of 27 passes for 250 yards against Kansas.

10. Kansas: It appears the season will mercifully come to an end when the Jayhawks visit West Virginia on Dec. 1.

THIS WEEK’S BEST GAME

Oklahoma State at Oklahoma:

2:30 p.m. Saturday

Bedlam plans to be exciting as always. A few weeks ago, it appeared OSU may be struggling with quarterback issues while the Sooners were beginning to peak. Now OU is having defensive issues — especially against the run — which could be the matchup to watch on Saturday.

THIS WEEK’S WORST GAME

West Virginia at Iowa State:

2:30 p.m. Friday

The Mountaineers are looking to snap a five-game losing streak, which is the longest for the school since the 1986 season. West Virginia still needs a victory to gain bowl eligibility. Iowa State will counter with redshirt freshman Sam Richardson, who threw four TD passes against Kansas.
