To Amy Ridenour, author of Nov. 11 article, "Global warming isn't happening," which appeared in the Opinion section:
I'd like to point out that temperature is not the only measure of warming. A lot of energy is required to convert H2O from its solid form (ice) to liquid (water). Consider applying heat to a cup containing water with a floating ice cube. Temperature remains essentially constant until that ice melts. At that time the temperature starts to increase rapidly.
Earth's ice has vanished rapidly during those 15 years of "no noticeable rise in global temperatures" of which you speak. Ships can now sail around Alaska, from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
Without ice, Earth will be unable to support animal life, including human.
It behooves us to do all we can to slow global warming. Quickly, before it becomes irreversible.
To steal a phrase: That, Amy, is an inconvenient truth. And, a few more years of education might help you.
