Spirit of '76
Oklahoma State is coming off a 59-21 wipeout of Texas Tech, which entered the game with a No. 23 ranking in the Associated Press poll.
On deck for the Cowboys is a road date against Oklahoma, which is 14th in this week's AP poll.
Here's the OSU mission: The Cowboys will try to beat ranked opponents in consecutive weeks for the first time since 1976. Coach Jim Stanley led OSU to wins over No. 5 Oklahoma and No. 10 Missouri on consecutive weeks during a season in which the Cowboys shared a Big Eight championship.
Of course, OSU ended last season with consecutive victories over ranked opponents (Oklahoma in the regular-season finale and Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl). But the games did not occur in consecutive weeks.
Can the Cowboys win in Norman for the first time since 2001 and party like it's 1976?
Cowboys vs. Belldozer
Oklahoma's Blake Bell is known as the "Belldozer" because of his success moving the chains and scoring touchdowns as a situational quarterback.
OSU was so concerned about Bell last season that the Cowboys added new defensive wrinkles in an attempt to neutralize his effectiveness.
Did OSU get a heavy dose of Bell? The opposite occurred. Bell carried just one time, scoring on a 28-yard run for OU's only touchdown with 2:25 remaining.
What happened? Bill Young said the Cowboys had only 10 players on the field.
"We had a substitution on defense," OSU's defensive coordinator said. "And one of the guys was celebrating the win with about two minutes to go in the game and he didn't go in."
Of course, you can expect OSU to have a plan for Bell again. And the Cowboys have their own situational quarterback in J.W. Walsh.
Top Chelf
OSU head coach Mike Gundy and offensive coordinator Todd Monken were asked if a conversation has occurred in which junior Clint Chelf has been told that he will be the starting quarterback the remainder of the season.
Gundy and Monken both indicated that conversation has not occurred - unless the "other" coach did it.
Wes Lunt has started five games this season. J.W. Walsh has started three games. Gundy said Chelf "deserved" to start the next game after the former third-team quarterback directed the Cowboys to a 38-point victory over Texas Tech last weekend.
Chelf is expected to make his third career start and his first road start. Question: Has any quarterback in OSU history ever made his first road start in a Bedlam game?
If Chelf's second-half performance at Kansas State is any sort of barometer, he won't be awed by his first road start.
Cowboys by the numbers
695: Snaps played by senior guard Lane Taylor this season without surrendering a sack.
85: Points scored by OSU in last two Bedlam games.
7: OSU has won at least seven games for a school-record seven consecutive seasons.
0: Number of touchdown passes thrown by Brandon Weeden in Bedlam 2011. He was held without a TD pass for the only time in his two years as a starter. The Cowboys still won by 34 points.
