Kelsey Grammer's "Boss" didn't win re-election on Starz.

The drama, which features Grammer as Chicago Mayor Tom Kane, won't be returning to the premium pay channel for a third season, according to deadline.com.

The show was originally picked up for a second season even before the first season had aired in 2011 and earned the former "Cheers" and "Frasier" actor a Golden Globe award for his portrayal of the power-wielding political figure hiding a degenerative neurological disease while running the city's Democratic machine.

"After much deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to not proceed with (a third season of) 'Boss,' " said Starz in a statement issued Tuesday and reported by the website.

"We remain proud of this award-winning show, its exceptional cast and writers, and are grateful to Kelsey Grammer, Farhad Safinia and our partners at Lionsgate TV."

There have been preliminary discussions between the pay cable network and producer Lions Gate Television about wrapping up the story with a two-hour movie, but there is no deal in place.

The series wrapped its second season on Oct. 19.
