Letter to the Editor: Set the table

What a sad country we've become when a family gathering together for the evening meal has become a new concept or program to achieve. Dinner together was an absolute given as I raised my children. I took it one step further; we ate at the table, the television was off, no one played with their cell phone, and if our home phone rang, we ignored it.

I had a hand-drawn sign on my refrigerator that read: "I will know what is going on in the world....and I will care about it."

Each of my three kids would choose a topic at dinner concerning our country or world, and we discussed it thoroughly while we ate.

They loved it, and still do. And no ... I'm not past 70, I still have teenagers who have grown into articulate, intelligent, caring people who love eating dinner as a family. It's a tradition, I guess.
