SEMINOLE - A late defensive stand by Metro Christian set up a classic Class 3A state quarterfinal finish, but the Patriots were unable to convert a red zone possession as Seminole hung on for a 34-28 victory.

Seminole advances to next week's state semifinals against Kingfisher in a battle of unbeatens.

The Patriots forced a Chieftain three-and-out with less than four minutes to play, and quarterback Matt Woolslayer led a drive deep into Seminole territory.

Metro had first down at the Seminole 12 with 30 seconds left, but fell short with three incompletions and a batted pass by Chieftain defensive back Stefan Wright.

The win - the 310th of Seminole coach Mike Snyder's 41-year career - keeps his team's hopes for a fifth state title alive.

"We beat a heck of a football team tonight," Snyder said. "But we got a couple of breaks and our kids overcame a lot of adversity."

Seminole (12-0) took an early lead as quarterback Doc Harvey scored on a 1-yard draw to end the Chieftains' first drive.

Seminole extended its lead to 14-0 with a 64-yard touchdown reception by Trenton Newsom.

Woolslayer, who finished with 394 all-purpose yards, scored his first of four rushing TDs halfway through the second quarter, pulling Metro within seven.

An interception by Metro defensive back Connor Drake put the ball back in Patriot hands with 1:18 left in the first half. It set Woolslayer up for a 2-yard sneak that tied the score at 14-14 at the break.

"At halftime, we just needed to refocus," Snyder said. "It wasn't one of those yelling and screaming halftimes."

Seminole was able to capitalize on back-to-back Metro turnovers to start the second half, setting up an 86-yard touchdown run by Newsom and a 1-yard run by Harvey.

Woolslayer answered with a 4-yard touchdown run to cut Seminole's lead to 28-21, but Harvey hit receiver Dakota Roush with an 81-yard touchdown bomb on the ensuing possession, pushing the Chieftain lead to 34-21.
