Tulsa's Taleya Mayberry scored 30 points but a Golden Hurricane rally in the second half fell short as Illinois won 82-75 Friday at the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Bahamas.
Mayberry, a Booker T. Washington graduate, hit 10-of-20 shots from the field, including 4-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc, and made all six of her free-throw attempts in the game for TU (0-4). However, the Golden Hurricane made just 35 percent of its field-goal attempts and 9-of-31 3-point tries.
Kelsee Grovey finished with 17 points and three steals for TU, and Loren McDaniel had 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Illinois (3-1) was led by Karisma Penn with 25 points.
Grovey went 4-for-8 on 3-point attempts in the first half for 12 points, while Mayberry had nine at the break
Illinois maintained a double-digit lead in the second half until a 3-pointer by Mayberry pulled TU within eight at 60-52 with 7:30 to play. Illinois answered with a bucket inside, but Mayberry hit another 3-pointer and Grovey had a steal and a layup followed by a foul shot to slash the deficit to four points. Illinois scored the next nine points, however, and TU never got closer than six the rest of the way.
TU faces Loyola Marymount at 11:15 a.m. Saturday in its final game in the Junkanoo Jam.
