OSU football talking points

For more OSU stories.
Fast forward
Oklahoma State's defense is preparing for a Baylor offense that will be in hurry-up mode.
OSU defensive coordinator Bill Young said defenders are "just running to get lined up" because the Bears use what he described as a "strange" (but effective) offense.
Explained Young, "They run a play, an inside run or a run away from the receivers, and the backside receivers don't run a route. They just kind of walk off the ball. So they are in position to line up for the next play on a tempo play. They are not coming back from 20 yards or 30 yards down the field. They are there, lined up and ready. So as soon as the offensive line is back, they are ready to go. They catch a lot of defenses (off-guard) with their tempo."
What's the challenge for OSU? "We've got to do a great job - which I didn't do last week - of getting in the call and not trying to make the perfect call, but let the players take over and let them play."
Special season?
Despite starting three quarterbacks and losing senior receiver Tracy Moore to injury, OSU has salvaged a 7-4 record and can finish as high as third in the Big 12 standings. In that regard, the Cowboys have exceeded expectations.
Know what sounds a little less special? 7-5. That's what OSU would be if the Cowboys lost a regular season finale at Baylor.
Know what sounds downright average? 7-6. That's what OSU would be if the Cowboys got swept by Baylor and a bowl opponent.
So, despite lots of pats on the back so far, OSU players and coaches have some work to do before this season can be declared a success.
Win out, and the record is 9-4. OSU has finished with nine wins only six times in program history. The Cowboys have won nine or more games each of the past four seasons.
OSU has finished with eight victories seven times and with seven wins on nine occasions.
Nine sounds somewhat special. Seven sounds just OK.
One-sided series
Guess which Big 12 school owns the longest current football winning streak against Baylor? It's Oklahoma State.
OSU was beaten 44-34 by Baylor in Mike Gundy's rookie season as head coach. The Cowboys haven't lost to the Bears since.
Not only has OSU won six in a row, all the games have been blowouts. Average score: Cowboys 48.8, Bears 17.2.
OSU is 15-1 against Baylor since the Big 12 was formed. The Cowboys haven't scored fewer than 34 points against the Bears since 1998 and, in the past six meetings, Gundy's team has hit the 40-point mark four times, the 50-point mark three times and generated a series-best 66 points in the game that started the streak.
Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III won a Heisman Trophy last season, but he looked like Joe Ordinary against OSU, when his team fell behind 49-3 and absorbed a 35-point defeat.
What does it all mean? It could mean OSU has been better and will be better again. Or it could mean Baylor players will be motivated to get the monkey off their back. Stay tuned.
