EUFAULA - A rural McIntosh County woman was arrested Tuesday after authorities found the body of her mother wrapped in a sheet in a garage.
Investigators said thousands of dollars in cash, which might have belonged to the dead woman, were found in the nearby mobile home of her daughter, Shelly Maytubby.
The state Medical Examiner's Office is trying to determine the cause of death of Erlene McCune, 79, whom Maytubby reportedly took from an assisted living center in Lawrence, Kan., two months ago.
Sheriff's Detective Jared West said Maytubby, 52, will be arraigned Thursday on charges of unlawfully disposing of human remains, obstructing an officer, disrupting an investigation and financial exploitation by a caretaker.
West said family members became concerned about McCune nearly two weeks ago when they were unable to reach her and asked the Sheriff's Office last week to try to locate the woman, who had dementia.
According to West, Maytubby claims that her mother died of natural causes about Nov. 11 or 12.
"She said she didn't want to take the body to a funeral home," West said.
He said family members had talked to McCune around that time, so she might have died in that time frame.
Until Maytubby brought her mother to Oklahoma from Kansas, the daughter lived alone in the mobile home about two miles west of Eufaula in the Twin Mountain area near Lake Eufaula.
West said he initiated contact with Maytubby, who after the first interview refused to talk further.
A search of the area surrounding her property was conducted.
"We didn't find anything, and so I continued to try to contact" Maytubby, West said.
"She told the family and a family friend that (McCune) had met a truck driver named Santa Claus in a dollar store parking lot and she hadn't seen her since."
Members of several area law enforcement agencies again searched the property and found McCune's body wrapped in the sheet in the garage next to the mobile home.
They also confiscated financial documents, medications and the large sum of money from Maytubby's residence.
"Where the money came from we're not clear on yet," West said.
