Letter to the Editor: Who's the nut?

Suppose a neighbor spends a week building a 50-foot-high platform in his front yard, and at the end of the week, he takes a loud megaphone, climbs to the top and announces to one and all: "I have built this platform, and I may jump off of it, and if I do you will all be sorry! By the way, I'm running for Congress, and would like your vote."
We then elect that person to Congress. In this scenario, just who is the nut?
In our entertainment-masquerading-as-news media, we are invited to have a case of the vapors about the fiscal cliff. But, we seem to be forgetting that Congress built the cliff, and is threatening us with a jump. We just re-elected almost all of that same Congress. Why?
