East Central receiver Stanvon Taylor has been named Gatorade Oklahoma Football Player of the Year.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pounder has been instrumental in leading the No. 1 Cards to the Class 5A championship game this season, scoring a team-high 19 touchdowns.
Cards head coach Bobby Klinck said the award puts Taylor in rare company. Klinck should know, because he won the same award as a Jenks High senior in 2000.
"This is a prestigious award won by the likes of Wes Welker, Gerald McCoy, Robert Meachem and Matt Holliday," Klinck said. "He's very deserving."
Welker, McCoy and Meachem were Oklahoma high schoolers who went on to the National Football League after illustrious college careers. Holliday is a six-time major league all-star outfielder with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Taylor, a University of Oklahoma commit, has 61 receptions for 1,035 yards and 15 TDs and two rushing TDs in 2012.
He also returned one of his four pass interceptions for a score and has an 85-yard kickoff return TD.
He had two receiving TDs and scored a third on a 57-yard run from scrimmage in the fourth quarter of last Friday's 26-14 semifinal win over McAlester.
East Central faces Carl Albert in the 5A final, set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.
Taylor is rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com and the state's No. 2 overall player and 165th nationally. Scout.com rates Taylor the nation's 11th-best cornerback.
""I'm obviously very proud of Stanvon and all that he has accomplished this year," Klinck said.
Taylor is the fourth Tulsa-area recipient of the Gatorade Award in the past six years, joining Metro Christian quarterback Andrew Hearon (2011), Central running back Demarco Cobbs (2009) and Jenks quarterback Mark Ginther (2007).
