IOWA STATE CYCLONES
Season record: 6-6, 3-6 in Big 12
Coach: Paul Rhoads (24-26, fourth season)
Best win: Entering its first home game as a member of the Big 12, TCU had a 12-game win streak - the longest among Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Iowa State upset the Horned Frogs 37-23. For the first time in program history, the Cyclones had beaten a ranked team in three consecutive seasons (Texas in 2010, Oklahoma State in 2011, TCU in 2012).
Worst loss: In their Sept. 12 Big 12 opener at Ames, the Cyclones mustered only 189 total yards in a 24-13 loss to Texas Tech. Iowa State was doomed by two fourth-quarter turnovers.
Top players
QB Sam B. Richardson: After alternating Steele Jantz and Jared Barnett at quarterback, coach Paul Rhoads turned to redshirt freshman Sam B. Richardson. Against Kansas, Richardson was 23-of-27 passing for 250 yards and four TDs. His efficiency dropped against West Virginia (13-of-31), but Richardson passed for three touchdowns.
LB A.J. Klein: A 248-pound senior and the 2011 Big 12 co-defensive player of the year, Klein has recorded 98 tackles this season. Against TU on opening day, he had seven tackles.
RB Shontrelle Johnson: During the Cyclones' Sept. 1 victory over Tulsa, Johnson rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown. He finished the regular season with 504 yards.
