Dr. Marion Scott Bowen, known to friends as Butch, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Sunday, November 4. Butch was the younger son of Mabel and James Bowen, born on August 22, 1924 in Cushing, OK. He grew up in Tulsa where he graduated from Central High School in 1942. During high school Butch played football and was active in Student Government. He remained active with Class of ‘42 friends throughout his life. After a year of studies at Oklahoma University and his initiation into Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, Butch enlisted in the United States Navy serving as radio man on naval fighter planes. Upon leaving the navy he returned to OU to finish his science requirements in preparation for Northwestern University Dental School. Butch married Marcelene Hardy in Chicago, IL on November 24, 1948. Lake Retreat on Grand Lake of the Cherokee became the family playground where Butch taught family and friends to water ski. He was an avid golfer, charter member of Cedar Ridge Country Club and enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren the essentials of golf. Butch is survived by his loving family: his wife, Marcelene and children, Nancy Bowen of Denver CO, Scott Bowen of Neponset, IL, Stacey Rose of Oklahoma City, OK and Alison Lee of La Jolla, CA and their spouses: Howell Lind, Debby Johnson Bowen, David Rose and Craig Lee. His ten grandchildren include Bethany Martell, Carrie Martell, James Bowen, Brent Bowen, Meredith (Rose) Schneberger, Sarah (Rose) Blood, Carley (Rose) McLaughlin, Coleman, Helen and Sadie Lee. Four great grandchildren live in Oklahoma City and two in Illinois. If you wish to honor Butch’s memory a contribution to Smile Train or Veterans of Foreign Wars, two charities he supported for years, is appreciated. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Friday, December 7 at All Souls Unitarian Church, 2952 South Peoria Ave. A light luncheon will follow. The Revs. Nancy Bowen and Howell Lind will officiate. This obituary was published in the Tulsa World on 12/3/2012.
