A closer look at the Cyclones

Quarterback: The Cyclones have been erratic at the QB position this season. Steele Jantz got eight starts. Jared Barnett got three. They combined for totals of 19 touchdown passes against 15 interceptions.

Sam B. Richardson: Richardson is a redshirt freshman QB from Florida, and he is expected to be the Cyclone starter when Iowa State clashes with TU in the Dec. 31 Liberty Bowl. Richardson played very well against Kansas and started in the season-ending loss to West Virginia.

Offense: At 372 yards per game, the Cyclones are ranked 88th nationally in total offense. In five games this season, Iowa State scored no more than 20 points.

Defense: Surrendering 445 yards per game, Iowa State is 97th nationally in total defense. The Cyclones are 109th in pass defense.

Forty years later: In the 1972 Liberty Bowl, the Cyclones lost 31-30 to Georgia Tech. Against TU, Iowa State makes its first Liberty Bowl appearance since that 1972 game.
