Tina M. Hanes was born November 17, 1916 as Ernestine Magness in Sabougla, Mississippi to Ethel Mitchell and Horace Magness. Named by her oldest sister, Carrie L. for one of Carrie’s childhood friends, Tina shortened it to Tina on her own. The youngest of eight children, all of whom preceded her in death. The oldest brother was known as J.W., followed by sisters, Carrie L., Jean, Theodora, (or Pete as she preferred), Mary, and Alva. Brother James Howard, otherwise known as Bill, was Tina’s favorite childhood playmate. Upon high school graduation, a lack of employment opportunities in Mississippi led Tina to join her two oldest sisters, Carrie L. and Jean who were living and working in Bartlesville. After a series of temporary jobs with various oil companies in Bartlesville and Tulsa, she landed a job with Warren Petroleum, which later merged with Gulf Oil, who later sold out to Chevron. During this period of time, Tina helped start Tulsa Bible School in far, East Tulsa. Bible studies were a daily occurrence her whole life long. Tina’s first marriage to Bill Beck lasted some twenty-five years. Known as “Aunt Tina” by her twenty-seven blood nieces and nephews, she assumed that moniker to many, many more upon her marriage to Charles E. Hanes in 1982, to whom she was married twenty years, until his death in 2002. Tina spent her lost remaining months living with niece and nephew, Cindy and Roger Hanes.
