Tulsa Police issued more than 100 citations and stopped more than 85 vehicles on South Memorial Drive during a recent red light enforcement campaign.

Sgt. Stephen Boyes said that units focused on all South Memorial intersections from 51st to 91st Nov. 26 through Friday.

A majority of the stops were for red or yellow light violations, Boyes said. A red light violation, when a vehicle enters an intersection when a traffic light is red, carries a $200 fine. A yellow light violation, when a vehicle doesn't clear an intersection by the time a traffic light turns red, is a $150 fine.

Boyes said with the timing of city traffic lights, yellow light violation vehicles were "not even making it halfway through the intersection" by the time the lights turned red.

Police cited red light violations as a leading cause of injury collisions in intersections.

"Hopefully now that it's been done and 85 people issued a ticket for running a light, they'll tell people and it will spread and people won't try to run a light," Boyes said.

Other citations issued during the enforcement included being uninsured and not having a driver's license, Boyes said.
