How did your child’s school do? See district and school site grades.

Most Tulsa-area school districts received a grade of B on district report cards published Wednesday by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

Of 17 Tulsa-area school districts, 12 received a B, four received a grade of C, and one got a D. No district received an A.

Statewide, Oklahoma public schools received a grade of C.

The district and statewide grades were released nearly six weeks after the department released an initial slew of grades for each of the state's 1,752 public schools.

Tulsa Public Schools was the only district among the 17 included on the Tulsa World list that got a D in the report, reflecting the fact that more than half of the district's 80-plus schools received a D or F in the earlier report.

Of the 37 Tulsa schools that received a D, 33 of them were elementary schools. Eight of its schools got an F.

Seventeen Tulsa schools were graded a C, and nine received a B. Three elementary schools - Eisenhower, Carnegie and Zarrow - got an A.

"This is a continuation of our efforts to provide clear-cut, transparent information to the public, particularly parents, about the performance of their local schools," State Superintendent Janet Barresi said.

Broken Arrow, Catoosa and Skiatook school districts each received a C grade.

At least two of those districts' grades were somewhat surprising. Broken Arrow received a C despite the fact that 16 of the district's schools received a B grade and seven received a C.

And Skiatook received a C even though three of its schools got a grade of B and only one a C.

But department spokeswoman Tricia Pemberton said district data calculations are not an average of site grades. And all students in the district were included.

Otherwise, the state and district report cards were calculated in the same way as school report cards with districts earning a grade point average (GPA) and a letter grade.

Those letter grades were based on 33 percent student achievement, 17 percent overall student growth, 17 percent bottom quartile student growth, and 33 percent whole school performance, Pemberton said.

For kindergarten-through-12th-grade districts, factors such as student attendance, graduation rates, advanced coursework, school climate surveys, and parent and community engagement went into the grade.

For K-8 districts, averages are derived from middle school performance criteria, she said.

The school site grades stirred concerns among some that the formula used to calculate them was flawed and led to grades that did not fairly represent many schools' performance.

The state Board of Education delayed the release for two weeks to study the issue before ultimately releasing the grades Oct. 25 based on the original calculation.
