John Jeffery Moon, 85, formerly of Bartlesville, died Friday, November 30, 2012. John was born February 2, 1927, in Bombay, India to Ralph M. and Lorene (Jeffery) Moon where he lived for 5 years before returning to the U.S. to live and graduate from high school in Kansas City, Missouri. John earned his B.S. in chemical engineering at Michigan Technological University, and his Master’s at Illinois Institute of Technology, completing both with high honors in only four years. In the fall of 1948, John began work as a chemical engineer for Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, OK. He also served two years in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. On April 12, 1952, John was united in marriage to Lois Irene Longfellow and returned to Bartlesville. In 1964, he joined Phillips International and relocated his family to Antwerp, Belgium to help develop the Petrochim petrochemical complex. During their seven year stay in Belgium, John was also a founding member and chairman of the Antwerp International School, and served two years as Chairman of the American Protestant Church in Antwerp. In 1971, John and his family returned to Bartlesville. His 37 years of employment with Phillips included work in Research and Development, the Process Division, the Natural Resources Group for Energy, Minerals, Gas and Gas liquids, and the Environment and Consumer Protection Division, where he remained as Division Manager until his retirement in 1985. John holds 17 U.S. patents in the field of polymer and hydrocarbon processing. He held numerous Board positions, including President, in several professional societies. After retirement, John spent his time enjoying his family, his dogs, traveling, video photography, tennis, and many other civic activities, including Meals on Wheels and the Bartlesville Biplane Expo. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Moon; and daughter, Karen Moon in 1986. John is survived by his wife, Lois; son, Jeff Moon (Jeanie and Sean) of Tulsa; son, Dr. Steven Moon (Debbie, Amy, Michael and Christopher) of Fayetteville, Arkansas; daughter, Linda Hollingsworth (Grant, Kara and Matthew) of Tulsa; sister, Mary Alice Moon of Indianapolis, Indiana; sister-in-law, Mrs. Ralph Moon of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; and three nieces and a nephew.
