McALESTER -- A 15-year-friendship turned violent earlier this year when a McAlester man with a history of drug abuse began sexually assaulting his neighbor, according to McAlester police detective Capt. Gary Wansick.

Paul Savala, 45, is alleged to have attacked the victim more than 20 times between April and October, Wansick said.

Savala was arrested Friday and charged in Pittsburg County with first-degree rape, first-degree burglary, forcible sodomy, transmitting a threat and possession of a controlled substance.

“He has no history of sexual assault,” Wansick said.

But he said Savala has a history of drug-related crimes.

The attacks went on for so long because, according to Wansick, the suspect intimidated the victim with threats against her, her children and her grandchildren.

He said she took the threats seriously and remained silent until she told a friend and the friend urged her to go to police.
