JENKS - As Owasso rallied to within two points late, Jenks reserve Jeff Fling came through with points, rebounds and timely plays to help Class 6A's No. 8 Trojans knock off No. 6 Owasso 55-47 before 600 in the Frank Herald gym Monday night.
All of Fling's seven points came in the final 4:29.
Fling scored off a rebound and then took a beautiful pass from Steven Parker at the 1:09 mark to score while being fouled. Fling made the free throw for a 51-44 lead, and suddenly the Trojan faithful could breathe easily again.
"Whatever the team needs I get it," Fling said. "I thought I did great, but I must give the credit to my team and coaches."
The win pushes the Trojans to 4-2, while Owasso falls to 3-1.
Fling was not the only star in the frantic final minutes.
Luke Phillips turned in a gutty effort with 17 points and 10 rebounds. He played on a sore ankle for part of the final quarter.
Trojan Jacob Seidel, who battled foul trouble early, joined Fling with key plays and tough defense down the stretch. Seidel finished with 12 points and made three big free throws in the final two minutes.
"What big minutes (he gave)," Jenks coach Clay Martin said of Fling. "He's a program kid and maximizes every second when he gets in."
Shake Milton's 16 points led the Rams. Jaylen Lowe added 11 as the only two Owasso players to reach double figures.
The Rams led early, and Milton's 3-point basket with 6:04 left in the first half gave his team its last lead at 14-12.
Jenks then went on a 10-0 run for a 22-14 cushion, ending on a 3-pointer by John Jones.
The Trojans' lead grew to 31-18 after Seidel and Phillips combined for seven points to open the third quarter.
However, Owasso slowly made up ground and never gave up.
Five times the Rams pulled to within two in the final 6:49, but Fling, Seidel, Phillips and Connor Houston came through with points when Jenks needed them.
Jenks 72, Owasso 56 (girls): The No. 8 Trojans hit nine 3-point baskets and Taylor Sears had four of them. Jessica Washington did not make a trey, but did everything else.
Washington scored a game-high 24 points, dished out six assists, got seven rebounds and three steals. Sears finished with 19 points and hit 7-of-10 shots from the field.
Owasso got a double-double performance from Kylie Pennington, who had 18 points and 13 rebounds. Teammate Dru Clark had 13 points.
The game had two ties and three lead changes early before Jenks (3-2) went on 10-3 run with 2:44 left in the second quarter.
The Trojan lead near the end of the half ballooned to 39-30, and unranked Owasso (1-4) could not recover.
