Cox Communications said Monday it had restored email services after an outage that affected thousands of customers since Friday.

Todd Smith, director of media relations for Cox, said basic functionality and email delivery had returned, with archives to be rebuilt over the next few days.

"All customers are fully restored as of Monday morning, though we're still in the process of moving old emails back into boxes," he said.

The email outages began Friday. Smith said they were the result of a failure in Cox's email storage system equipment.

"We were able to restore the existing system, though we're replacing some equipment to eliminate the issue from occurring again," he said.

On Sunday, Cox spokeswoman Kristin Peck said in a statement that the company was focused on restoring email as quickly as possible.

"We know this experience is not consistent with our promise to deliver reliable products and services, and we sincerely apologize for the frustration this has caused," she said.

The outage only affected customers who use Cox's email service, not those using other email services such as Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail through Cox's Internet service, which was not affected.
