With just five days to go until Christmas, the Tulsa World's annual Neediest Families fund drive stands at $202,407, but a final push in needed to meet or top the goal of $300,000.

The Neediest Families drive was conducted for many years by The Tulsa Tribune. The World took up the drive when the Trib closed in 1992 and since then the World has raised $5.3 million to help thousands of area families who are down on their luck.

Over the last few weeks, World staff writer Shannon Muchmore has been profiling families, selected by the Salvation Army, who are among those who will receive Christmastime assistance. Their stories are in many cases heart-breaking.

All of the money raised by the Neediest Families drive will go to the Salvation Army for assistance to enrolled families in the form of vouchers for food, rent, utilities and medical bills. None of the money raised is used for administrative costs.

For those who already have donated, thanks. If you wish to contribute to the fund drive, send a check to the Neediest Families Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1770, Tulsa, OK 74102. Or go to tulsaworld.com/funddrive for other ways to donate.

Big-hearted readers of the Tulsa World have always come through to put the Neediest Families drive over the top. Let's keep that record intact.
