Letter to the Editor: First line of defense

Teachers are the children's first line of defense in the classroom. Like it or not, that's the way it is. Schools are a soft target for homicidal madmen. Teachers should be trained and ready to use deadly force, if necessary, to protect their defenseless students. Dealing with a homicidal madman with emotional pleas or promises of counseling and therapy won't work. Response time of campus police and law enforcement personnel may not be quick enough. When the threat is there, immediate defensive action must be taken by the teacher and deadly force might be the only alternative.
I realize these are controversial words. But if at least one armed teacher could have engaged the madman at the Connecticut school, maybe those defenseless children wouldn't be dead today.
