An 80-year-old pedestrian who was injured Dec. 15 in a hit-and-run crash on Cherry Street died early Saturday, a family member said.
JoAnn Carlson was hit in a crosswalk at 15th Street and Rockford Avenue about 7:30 p.m. and was taken to St. John Medical Center in critical condition with broken ribs, a fractured sternum, broken pelvis, two broken ankles and a compound facture of the arm.
Granddaughter Elizabeth Carlson said she succumbed to her injuries about 3 a.m. Saturday.
Police described the vehicle that hit her as a newer-model white or silver sedan with "nice tires and rims," possibly a Lincoln, Cadillac or Ford Taurus.
The vehicle was headed east and did not stop after the collision, police said.
"It has been a difficult time for the family," Carlson said. "We just wanted to spend as much as time as we could with her at the hospital."
Carlson said her grandmother had just eaten dinner at Hideaway Pizza at 1419 E. 15th St. prior to the accident. It was one of her favorite restaurants, she said.
A makeshift memorial has been set up near the accident site in the woman's honor, she said.
"She was well-known there," Carlson said. "She loved the service and the people."
When JoAnn Carlson was not enjoying operas and ballets during her spare time, the longtime Tulsan worked 12-hour shifts at St. John Medical Center because "she didn't want to retire," according to family members.
The Carlsons are hoping the tragedy will lead to significant changes along Cherry Street to prevent future auto-pedestrian crashes.
The family has been in discussions with the Mayor's Office about getting lighting installed around the popular area to improve the safety of pedestrians and drivers.
A memorial service for JoAnn Carlson is scheduled to be held Dec. 26 at Calvary Temple Assembly of God at 4701 W. Edison Street at 10 a.m.
