James Woodard gets C-USA honor for third time

For the third time this season, University of Tulsa guard James Woodard has been named the Conference USA basketball freshman of the week.

During a loss at Creighton, Woodard totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds. At Oral Roberts on Saturday, he was a key figure during TU’s comeback from a 17-point, second-half deficit. Woodard scored all of his 18 points during the second half – included the go-ahead 3-pointer with 4:34 remaining – as the Golden Hurricane rallied for a 72-68 victory.

In addition to averaging 14.1 points per game, Woodard – a former All-State performer at Edmond Memorial – is Tulsa’s leader in rebounds (6.1 average) and assists. The Hurricane (7-5) does not play again until Saturday, when it clashes with Florida State in the Orange Bowl Classic at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The 1 p.m. game is televised by Fox Sports Oklahoma.

The Conference USA player of the week of UTEP guard Konner Tucker. In four games (including victories over Oregon and Nebraska), Tucker averaged 15.0 points on 50 percent shooting overall and 15-of-24 shooting from 3-point range. During the Miners’ 91-84, triple-overtime win over Oregon, he was 9-of-9 on free throws and converted on a big 3-point shot with 13 seconds left.
