MIAMI, Okla. - A competency hearing for an Illinois man charged with planning to destroy 48 Ottawa County churches with Molotov cocktails is set for Jan. 8, court officials said Thursday.
Gregory Arthur Weiler II, 24, of Elk Grove Village, Ill., is charged in Ottawa County District Court with possession of an explosive or incendiary device and violation of the Oklahoma Anti-Terrorism Act.
He appeared in court on Thursday. The hearing will be heard before Special Judge Bill Culver, the Ottawa County District Attorney’s office confirmed.
Family members have said Weiler suffers from mental illness and both of his parents were drug-users and committed suicide, according to published reports.
According to court records, law enforcement officers found in Weiler’s room at the Miami Legacy Inn & Suites handwritten notes detailing how to make Molotov cocktails and a hand-drawn map of 48 churches.
A green military duffel bag that held 50 apparent Molotov cocktails and other explosive-related items was found outside in the motel’s Dumpster by a maintenance worker.
Weiler is being held without bail in the Ottawa County jail.
