Letter to the Editor: Not a give-away

Webster's Dictionary definition of entitlement:

"1a: the state or condition of being entitled: right b: a right to benefits specified esp. by law or contract 2: a government program providing benefits to members of a specified group; also: funds supporting or distributed by such a program 3: an organization (as a business or governmental unit) that has an identity separate from those of its members ..."

Nothing in the definition suggests that an entitlement constitutes a give-away or an unearned charitable benefit. Hence, retirees should not take umbrage at the use of the word to include Social Security benefits. A person might be hard pressed to think of a better word.
