New trout fishery to open: A new winter trout fishery opens in southwest Oklahoma on Tuesday, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has announced.

Medicine Creek, in the city of Medicine Park, will be the home of a new winter trout fishery in a half-mile stretch from Gondola Dam downstream to the Oklahoma 49 bridge, essentially in downtown Medicine Park. The stream will be stocked roughly every two weeks, as are other Oklahoma winter trout fisheries.

The town sits at the foothills of the Wichita Mountains, home to the famous Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge that attracts tourists from across the nation each year.

The new state-designated fishery comes after the department had to stop providing trout at Quartz Mountain because of the presence of golden algae in the stream below Altus-Lugert Lake. Golden algae is a microscopic organism that, under certain conditions, can produce toxins that cause extensive fish kills.

Calling seminar: A predatorcalling seminar at Bass Pro Shops returns again this January.

Scott Ruff will present the “Coyote and Bobcat Calling Seminar” at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 in the upstairs seminar room at Bass Pro Shops in Broken Arrow.

Ruff is an expert caller, videographer and program presenter with many years of multi-state experience.

The event is free and open to the public. Call 918-355-7600 for information.

Fishing competition on TV: Tulsa-based Jack Link’s Major League Fishing announced its second televised event will premiere on the Outdoor Channel at 8 p.m. Thursday. The General Tire Summit Cup episodes will air six times per week.

Outdoor Channel produced seven episodes of the Summit Cup, held in late August on Western New York’s Chautaqua Lake. Each day of the six-day competition comprises one episode with the seventh episode showcasing insider fishing tips.

Major League Fishing is a partnership between Outdoor Channel and 24 of the world’s best anglers. The league features made-for-television bass fishing events designed to bring highlevel challenges to participants and entertainment and insight to viewers.

Hearing on new regulations set: A public hearing on proposed new hunting and fishing regulations is scheduled in Oklahoma City the evening of Jan. 8.

The formal meeting will focus solely on proposed regulation changes with comments recorded for public record. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation headquarters auditorium, 1801 N. Lincoln Blvd.

Among subjects expected to draw public comment are proposed changes to deer season limits and bait fish restrictions.

The public comment period for the new proposed hunting and fishing regulations comes to a close on Jan. 11. The proposed changes can be reviewed online at the department’s website, where a public comment section also is available. The information can be found at tulsaworld.com/wildlife.

Comments also may be submitted in writing. Those who send comments are asked to indicated the specific rulechange proposal to which their comment applies. Comments may be mailed to Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, Public Comment Period, P.O. Box 53465, Oklahoma City, OK, 73152.
