Former U.S. Rep. J.C. Watts to speak at Feb. 9 gala
Former U.S. Rep. J.C. Watts will be the featured speaker at the 2013 VEP Gala Celebration, honoring the group of military personnel participating in the Veterans Entrepreneurship Program presented each year by the Riata Center of Entrepreneurship and School of Entrepreneurship in the Spears School of Business.
The gala will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at Gaillardia Country Club in Oklahoma City.
The VEP is an entrepreneurial training program designed to empower veterans by providing them critical resources to turn their business ideas into workable business models, helping them create companies and sustainable ventures.
Watts was elected to the U.S. Congress from the Fourth District of Oklahoma in 1994 and served eight years before deciding not to seek re-election in 2002.
He is chairman of J.C. Watts Companies and provides strategic focus and program leadership to the company's business partnerships, joint ventures, engagements, alliances and initiatives. He advises or serves as a corporate director for several major companies, including John Deere, Wells Fargo, NASCAR, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Clear Channel Communications, Dillard's Department Stores and Terex Corp.

Eyemart ministore launched at mall
Eyemart Express has launched Eyemart ministores in Woodland Hills Mall.
The mini-store is a 100-square-foot eyeglass showroom featuring frames and lenses at various price points. The goal is to offer mall shoppers an alternative to higher-priced stores.
Eyemart Express opened its first store in 1990 in Appleton, Wis., and has since grown into the seventh-largest optical retail in the United States with 139 stores in 31 states. In addition to the Eyemart Express name, the company operates as Vision4Less, VisionMart Express and Eyewear Express, as well as the new eyemartexpress.com.
Flintco marketing executive honored
Dana Birkes of Flintco LLC has been selected by the ranking committee of ExecRank as a Top Private Company Marketing Executive for 2012.
The rankings are the result of two years of research and feedback from evaluation committees, and top chief marketing officers that yielded an algorithm for how to rank marketing executives based on their performance in 24 key areas.

Tax professional award given to Tulsa attorney
Sheppard "Mike" Miers Jr. has been honored during the Oklahoma Tax Institute by receiving the Rick Kells' Outstanding Tax Professional award. The Oklahoma Society of CPAs created the award to recognize individual achievement and leadership as a certified public accountant practicing in taxation.
Miers, a shareholder in the Tulsa office of the GableGotwals law firm, has 45 years of legal experience and is a CPA. His clients include corporations, business management and individuals. He assists on tax planning and compliance, employee benefits, deferred compensation, business and financial transactions, estate planning, probate, and the administration of estates and trusts.
