Every August, many Tulsa-area children get free haircuts as they prepare to go back to school after summer vacation.
But this year, Oklahoma Technical College also will host its popular Cuts for Kids event in early January to give a boost to kids returning to school after Christmas and New Year's break.
It's a way for OTC students to brush up on their skills, while giving back to the community.
"The barber instructors and students are always looking for ways to give back to the community and this is one of the most rewarding," said Jamie Kidder, OTC campus director. "The look on a child's face when they have a new haircut renews an excitement in our students."
Every year, OTC provides free haircuts for children through its annual "Cuts for Kids" event to launch the new school year.
The event has been so popular in the past, the college decided to add a mid-season event to help usher kids back into the swing of the second half of the school year.
Anyone age 18 and younger can get a free haircut at the college, located at 4444 S. Sheridan Road, from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. both Wednesday and Thursday.
No appointments are necessary.
The haircuts are performed by supervised barber students and provide them real-world experience as well as allowing them to provide a service to the community.
All other shop services will still be available those days at regular menu prices and by appointment.
OTC is a licensed and accredited institution that offers various diploma and degree programs in automotive, welding, barbering, heating and air-conditioning and other fields.
