Letter to the Editor: Questions guideline

A.M. Schnitzer said because of the wording of the Second Amendment and the fact that there were only muzzle-loaded guns at the time, that only those guns should be exempt from law ("2nd Amendment," Dec. 31). If that is the guideline, then the First Amendment would only cover freedom of the press in newspapers as there was no television or radio at the time and freedom of religion would not cover Mormons, Scientologists or even Jehovah's Witnesses because they were not here at the time.

Also, the Eighth Amendment regarding cruel and unusual punishment would certainly allow hanging, firing squads and other popular forms of capital punishment because they were not cruel or unusual in those times.
