Letter to the Editor: Befuddled

I am bewildered. So many Christians seem intent - adamant actually - on keeping deadly weapons for personal protection. I wonder why they feel the need for them. To my mind, no amount of rationalization can negate Jesus' straightforward commands to love your enemies. Feed them. Pray for them. He modeled this supremely when he prayed forgiveness over those who had tortured him and were in the process of crucifying him.

That's love.

If an intruder murders me I will be in heaven momentarily. If he murders my family I will be devastated for sure, but that would only serve to draw me closer to the Lord. But if I kill the intruder, I have just usurped God's business and appointed myself judge over him and sent him straight to hell, thereby removing any chance he may have had to repent, for which cause Jesus died. That's not love.

The Bible says: "Render not evil for evil, but a blessing." And, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul." Are they so afraid?

If the Lord is finished with me here, he can take me home in whatever manner seems good to him, but if he is not, then I am indestructible. If God wants me here then no one can overrule him. So tell me again why Christians need guns?

The only thing I can come up with is that the Lord must be finished with them. But they don't want to see him.
