The Life of Lida Jean Steph Moore Lida Jean was born to her mother, also named Lida and father Walter Steph on October 30, 1918 in Okmulgee, OK. She had 3 younger brothers: Walter Becket, Tommy and Jimmy. She was very attractive in her teenage years and in high school won the title of Miss Telephonic, an award she said no one else wanted. In her senior high school year, she and some other girlfriends agreed to be dates for some college freshmen at OU. She met and struck up a conversation with a young man named Sam who was not her date but whom she thought was very nice. That night the young man went home and told his mom he had met the woman he was going to marry. They did and stayed married for 67 years. She told us of the time he took her on a date to go frog gigging on his uncle’s farm east of Okmulgee. That uncle went on to be US Senator E H Moore from Oklahoma and he and his wife were life-long friends of Jean and Sam. She attended Okmulgee Junior College and when her family moved to Stillwater she transferred to OSU and joined the Phi Beta Phi sorority. She was a strong OSU fan all her life which made for a long friendly rivalry with Sam who went to OU receiving his law degree. She once won a gold pin for typing 60 words per minute. During WWII Sam enlisted in the army and while he was stationed in North Carolina she lived there too. After the war they moved to Tulsa and lived several places before buying a house on 24th street and starting a family. They started attending First Presbyterian Church about that time and Mrs. Moore continued to call that her church home for the next 71 years. They had two children: Randy and Meredith and lived on 24th street for 10 years before moving out to a wooded area out past 74th and Harvard. Mrs. Moore played golf and tennis and was a deaconess of First Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of Gillies for the Gilcrease Museum. Along with PEO, a bridge club, a sewing club and tirelessly drove her kids to and from school in town each day, on hilly, steep, sometimes icy roads since school busses didn’t go out to where they lived. There were many encounters with wild animals such as snapping turtles, snakes, pigs, large frogs, foxes, a raccoon and the cattle that broke thru the back fence into their yard. After her kids went off to college she remained active in the clubs she always belonged to and began more volunteer work with such organizations as Meals on Wheels. She tried to walk the neighborhood every day and was a challenge to keep up with. She was also an avid reader of Christian books and was known for giving wise advice and having a wonderful sense of humor. She could laugh at herself when she did something silly. In her final years she lived at The Parke, an assisted living center in south Tulsa and enjoyed visits from her kids and 4 grandchildren: Erin, Laura, Lisa and Jean, her son-in-law Richard and her 2 great- grandchildren Margo and Andre. She loved eating at Mimi’s and Red Lobster and also would attend the First Presbyterian Church once in a while. She was active and fun right up to when she finally succumbed to a brief illness. Lida Jean or “Grammy” as we came to call her was a very special person, warm and friendly adored by her family and was well liked by everyone who knew her. She was also generous to many charities. She was the best possible role model as a wife, mother and friend anyone could ever expect to meet and we wish her well in heaven. Survivors include: daughter, Meredith her husband Richard Richards of Tulsa, grandchild Laura Richards and great-grandchildren Margo and Andre, son Randy Moore and wife Janet of Oklahoma City, grandchildren Erin and her husband Garrett Booth, Lisa and her husband Daniel Chesney, and Jean Moore, all of Oklahoma City.
